Patricia Pender

Biography

Patricia Pender is a Senior Lecturer in English and Writing at the University of Newcastle, where she specialises in early modern literature, women’s literary history, and gender and popular culture. She is the author of Early Modern Women’s Writing and the Rhetoric of Modesty (2012) and co-editor, with Rosalind Smith, of Material Cultures of Early Modern Women’s Writing (2014).

Her latest book, I’m Buffy and You’re History: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Contemporary Feminism examines the cult TV series from a range of feminist perspectives including second wave, third wave, transnational, and post-feminism, alongside studies of masculinity and fandom. It explores how Buffy gave contemporary TV viewers an exhilarating alternative to the tired cultural trope of a hapless, attractive blonde woman victimised by a murderous male villain and went on to become one of the most widely analysed texts in contemporary popular culture.
